URBAN IRONY
My work exists at the intersection of the figurative and the abstract, serving as a subtle, cerebral inquiry into the human journey. Driven by my own life experiences, I explore the treatment of surface over time to play with metaphor, memory and identity. In URBAN IRONY, I am drawn to the aged, gnarled and dented look of corrugated iron, contemplating a beauty and resilience far beyond the appearance of the captured moment. Anchored by the signature piece, Soul Intention, this body of work relies on weathered abstraction.
I often wonder about the irony of iron,
the corrugated kind.
It’s been around awhile,
robust, versatile.
An icon of Australian urban and rural landscape.
I’m drawn to its aged, gnarled and dented look.
There’s a layering too.
Colour upon colour, wrinkles of light and shade,
emblematic of something beyond
the simple life lived.
In its presence, I think of beauty,
the richly weathered kind.
Wisdom comes to mind, humility too.
Then, I wonder about the journey,
that wonderfully unique collaboration of artist and artists,
unknown and unknowing.
